Bagalkote or Bagalkot is a town in the Bagalkot district of the Indian State of Karnataka. It is a major town in the north of Karnataka. The town is famous for many attractions but it is most famous for its Holi-Habba Festival (festival of colors).

Bagalkot is famous for its festival of colors and is known to rank second in India after Kolkata for having celebrated an elaborated Rang Panchami. The festival lasts a full four days. The first day an ancient ritual of Kama Dhana is performed followed with three days of playing with colors. Holi is celebrated with a lot of grandeur and magnificence in the town. It symbolizes unity among all sects of people in the town. Everyone comes together to celebrate this joyous event of colors. Holi was previously celebrated for 6 days with of the last five days dedicated to the “Onees”. The Onees represent the five different localities of the town namely constituting of Janipeth, Hosapeth, Halepath, Killa and Venkatapeth. The festival was then reduced to three days because of security reasons.  This festival has been a major attraction for many tourists and has been a flourishing source of income for many.

Temples in Bagalkot

With five localities residing in one single town the town has its fair share of temples. The temples in this town are from an ancient era and the architecture of each temple is breath – taking.

Jain Temple

The Jain Temple of Pattadakkal is a three-storey ancient temple located on the Bank of river Malaprabha. The temple is a marvelous structure of architecture adorning a sanctum which is surrounded by a circular path known as Pradakshinnapatha. There elaborate stone carvings on the walls of the temples with animal figures which just adds to its beautiful shrine. Beautiful figures of dancers can also be seen around the temple.

Virupaksha Temple is one of the popular temples of the religion built between 733 and 745 AD by Lokamahadevi, queen of Vikramaditya 2. The temple is a replica of that of the Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram. This temple is a fine example of the Dravadian style of architecture. The pillars and walls of the temple are engraved with various bas relief figures of humans and animals. Also various structures of Nataraja, Lingodbhava, Ravananugraha, and Ugranarshima can be seen throughout the temple.

Kashivisvera Temple
The temple was constructed during the 8th century and is believed to be the last temple of the early Chalukalyan Architecture in the Pattadakkal region. The ancient shrine was created by Rashtrakutas in Naga Architecture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. On visisting one can witness various sculptures and bas relief figures of five sakhas, river goddess, grauda, ganas and other human and animal figures in various positions. Engravings of  Ravana and Krishna have been displayed on the walls on the temple representing Hindu epics.

Huchappayagudi temples
This is one of the most famous temples which was constructed in the 8th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a shikhara over the main sanctum which is the most commonly used style in the Chalukyan Culture. The ancient temple was constructed using Rekha Nagra Architectural Style. The temple has chambers known as Antrala. The ceiling in the main sanctum has Natraja images and is embellished with elaborate cravings.

The town apart from temples also has a water park where the children could have their own fun. This water park is located in the Kanthi Resorts on the outskirts of the town. The park has a big swimming pool with various sizes of slides on the sides of the pool. This water park has never failed to attract the kids while in town.
